In the summer of 2006, Birch Pereira and Cynthia Dillard were looking
for a creative outlet for the new music they had been writing. This
music, though composed in a jazz idiom, was shaped by their varied background in classical, folk and world musics.
Assembling this music as an entity they called "Cytosoul," they performed around Seattle with other talented musicians until the band eventually became the quartet it is today. After a year of performing around the Northwest, Cytosoul was featured on a Sonarchy radio broadcast (a
show which features Northwest, original, innovative music every Saturday
night on the popular Seattle Indie station 90.3, KEXP). The four
musicians were so intently tuned into each other that night that they gave one of their most expressive performances of their material (and even
wrote a new song on the fly). With all but one song taken from this
broadcast, the group has put together their first CD, Balance
